Ray Leightman

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Ray Lightman Israel holds a very special place in the heart of Ray Leightman. He proposed to his wife, Ida, at the top of Masada at sunrise. The couple returned to Israel in 1994 to celebrate the bar mitzvah of their son Eric. “We were so happy to have Eric’s bar mitzvah in Israel, we really wanted it to be more of a Jewish experience,” Ray recalls.

Ray has enjoyed his Jewish life experiences and is hoping to share that passion with the people of Broward County. As president of Broward County Northern Trust, this banker has invested his heart in helping the Jewish community flourish in the area.

“I want to create a Jewish legacy and it’s especially important for the Broward County area,” Ray explains. “Very few people here are actually from this area and they don’t identify with the county, we need to develop their allegiance to help them feel connected.

Richard Berkowitz heads one of the country’s most successful CPA firms, serves on several charitable organization boards and will manage to cycle 400 miles in New England this year for a major cancer fundraiser.

This Jewish leader is awestruck by the response of the community when it comes to facing tough economic challenges. “When there is a great need, the South Florida Jewish community jumps in and meets those needs. It’s encouraging.”

Inspiring Young Friends

Part of Bryan Drowos’ upbringing from the very start was based on a strong connection to Jewish life. His dad, Jeff, was president of the synagogue in Wilmington, Delaware where Bryan was born and grew up, and Jeff’s parents were also the presidents of the Men’s Club and Sisterhood.

Learning from those experiences as a child, Bryan has become a great example for others in his South Florida community where he and his wife Joanna are outstanding role models. Bryan was the Broward Federation’s recipient of the Young Leadership Award in 2004.

“It all started with a trip to Israel 24 years ago. We were on a Federation Young Leadership mission from Broward County. We had never been to Israel, and, once we decided to go, everything began to make sense,” Carrie Schulman reminisces and describes how she and her husband, David, became committed to the Jewish Federation of Broward County. The couple has made many visits to Israel since, and even brought their young family on a mission years ago. The children “saw snow for the first time” on the Golan Heights. Carrie still believes that a trip to Israel can make all the difference in the world when it comes to caring about the Jewish people in the Broward community and worldwide.
